Background

The Methodist Church has worked with A Rocha UK to develop Eco District.  In March 2019, Methodist President, Revd Michaela Youngson, commended the Eco Church award scheme and the adoption of Eco District by the Methodist Church.

The Methodist Church has set an aspirational target of becoming a net zero carbon emissions church by 2030.  Eco Church is a key part of achieving this target.

Our Progress

A Rocha District Bronze AwardIn September 2023 we were awarded an Eco District Bronze Award (only the second district to have received the award).

The award affirms the district’s attention to the care of God’s creation and encourages the adoption of Eco Church by churches in the area.

We are now considering moving towards Silver.

BEH Bronze Eco District Certificate

We have adopted a District Environmental Policy.

Our District Eco Committee is responsible for shaping the movement of the district towards net zero.

We have a District Eco Forum which meets four times a year on Zoom.  New resources, ideas and achievements are shared by email to forum group members periodically.  To register with the Eco Forum to receive future updates and details of meetings, please email dde@behdistrict.org.uk.  In time, details of resources will be included on this webpage including details of awards achieved by our churches and circuits.

Currently across the district we have 76 churches registered for the Eco Church scheme.  Of those registered, 37 churches have achieved a bronze award and 9 have silver.

Recent Eco Church awards:

Trinity, Biggleswade (North Bedfordshire circuit) - Bronze Award
Great Bentley (Tendring circuit) - Bronze Award
